HOW TO PLAY

Start here.

YOU’LL NEEDOne playground ball and chalk or four markers
Watch Four SquarePlayworks
  1. 1Mark four connected squares, number them one through four, and place one player in each; extra players form a line beside square one.
  2. 2The player in square four serves by bouncing the ball once in their own square, then striking it with an open hand into another square.
  3. 3Each receiver must strike the ball after no more than one bounce so it lands inside another player’s square. Players may not catch, carry, or hold it.
  4. 4A player is out for missing, letting the ball bounce twice, hitting a boundary or outside the court, or making an illegal hold. That player joins the line; lower-numbered players rotate up and the next waiting player enters square one.
  5. 5Play for ten minutes. Finish the rally in progress at the whistle; the player who then occupies square four wins the match.

REMIX THE RULES

Complete twists.

King’s callBefore serving, square four adds one rule for that rally, such as non-dominant-hand returns. Everyone still returns the ball after one bounce into another square. Missing, hitting out, holding the ball, or breaking the added rule ends the rally and puts that player out. Rotate squares, then reset the added rule.
